Below is a list of my favourite apps, I use mostly Apple products and this page will be split into Mac apps and iOS apps. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but a collection of apps that I use frequently.
My Favourite Apps
Web Browsers
Browsers are the windows to our digital world. I use a number of browsers for different use cases. My primary browser is Google’s Chromium Developer browser. In addition to Chromium, I also use Firefox’s Developer browser. I am logged into Google’s ecosystem with both of these browsers. I also use Microsoft’s Edge browser, again the developer version with Microsoft ecosystem of software and services.
Productivity Apps
Kindle
I have been reading ebooks for well over a decade (ever since the second generation Kindle was released) and have never looked back. I am fully invested within the Kindle ecosystem and read books both on the Kindle iOS app and also on my Kindle Oasis. While I love the Oasis it is expensive, the Kindle Paperwhite is a better value for your money.
I love the Kindle for its portability and how it can hold hundreds of books. A key and important attribute is the ability to highlight and make notes on what I’ve read. Being able to make notes, summarising, and re-surfacing highlights from books you read regularly is a known and proven technique in terms of improving retention and idea generation. Using the Kindle to read, make notes, and highlight as I read is a huge part of how I read books and I would never have been able to create my current workflow without an ebook reader like the Kindle.
Audible
For times when it is inconvenient to read from either the Kindle Oasis or from the Kindle app, I rely on the Audible to “read” books. I discovered the service in 2008 and have amassed a sizable book collection since then. Consuming books via audio offers a great productivity hack, as you can often multitask while listening to an audiobook.
Readwise
One of the most valuable tools in my knowledge management toolkit today is Readwise. It is a service that brings together
Notion
Craft
Craft is a relatively recent addition to my tool kit, but I consider it a game-changer in terms of a note-taking and research app. To me, Craft is the perfect combination of power and simplicity and I dare say the most beautiful note-taking app that I have come across.
Re-installing apps on macOS
On occasion, I will format my SSD and install the latest version of macOS from the Mac App Store. To remind me of the core apps that I need to install, I wrote the following blog posts to help me find all of the main apps that I need. You may also find them useful too.
